Garden bargains 'continue to attract people to outdoor life'

Garden bargains 'continue to attract people to outdoor life'With grow-your-own offering garden bargains and many people getting great satisfaction from their outdoor activities, gardening continues to be as popular as ever, new research shows.

The Horticultural Trades Association's (HTA) latest study on the UK's gardening habits found that people are planning on spending at least the same amount on their gardens as last year.

As the garden offers numerous benefits for people, it's not surprising that 86 per cent of people questioned also plan on spending either the same amount or even more time entertaining and relaxing in their garden this summer.

The research revealed that nearly half (45 per cent) of those questioned who had a garden said that they intend to grow edible produce this year.

HTA director of marketing Andrew Maxted said: "Providing the weather is favourable and the economic situation continues to improve the indications are that the garden industry should show further growth in 2010."

Earlier this month, the HTA reported that Aylett Nurseries, based in St Albans, has become the first independent garden centre to become a full member of the Growing Media Initiative (GMI) – an initiative which aims to reduce peat use.
