Garden centre promotes back to work skillsThe unemployed and people with disabilities are getting the chance to gain new skills thanks to a garden centre.

Benefit claimants and people with learning difficulties have been undertaking a course at the Four Seasons Garden Centre on Ashton Road, Darwen, Blackburn, the Citizen reported.

After being referred by bodies including JobCentrePlus, the probation service and Bootstrap, a total of 64 people have been taking a 12-week course in gardening skills.

On completion of the course, the garden centre provides a letter of recommendation.

Speaking to the newspaper, councillor Michael Law-Riding, executive member for leisure and culture, said initiative was a prime example of partnership working benefiting people in the community.

"Thousands of bulbs have now been planted in preparation for spring and at present we are very busy selling Christmas trees and other seasonal plants and shrubs," he added.

The scheme, which is funded by the Working Neighbourhood Fund until March 2011, is part of the Lifestyle for Work project of Blackburn with Darwen Council.

In November 2007, the Working Neighbourhood scheme replaced the Communities and Local Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
