Gardeners 'snapping up vegetable seeds'

19/03/2010

Gardeners 'snapping up vegetable seeds'People across the country are embracing the grow-your-own trend and snapping up garden bargains like vegetable seeds, it has been reported.

According to B&Q, sales of vegetable seeds have increased three-fold in recent weeks compared to the same period last year, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Vegetable seeds are now outselling flower ones, the company said. Only 22 per cent of recent seed sales were for flowers, compared to 78 per cent for vegetables, it added, representing a dramatic shift from only a decade ago when flowers accounted for 70 per cent of the seeds purchased.

Speaking to the newspaper, Steve Guy, B&Q's horticultural trading manager, said: "After such a harsh winter the recent sunshine has seen customers spring into action in the garden.

"Last year saw people give growing their own a go, and this spring we're seeing that last year's novices are now this year's enthusiasts."

Earlier this month, Which? Gardening said seeds are garden bargains and are often better value than plug plants.
