Gardeners encouraged to sign up for allotments

06/01/2010

Gardeners encouraged to sign up for allotmentsKeen gardeners are being encouraged to take advantage of new allotments available in Severn Vale, Avon.

Nearly 140 allotments are to be made available for green-fingered people in Thornbury, thanks to a generous farmer who has provided land along with 40 car-parking spaces, the Thornbury Gazette reported.

Located on Ham Lane, near to the Oldbury Power Station, local farmer David Rugman donated the land, which will be known as the Hamallotments.

Although Mr Rugman will remain landlord, the day-to-day running of the allotments will be co-ordinated by local gardeners Pete Maidstone and David Hutton.

While 42 of the allotments have already been snapped up, Mr Maidstone said the owners are hoping many more applications will be made for the remaining pitches.

Speaking to the newspaper, he said: "The site is unique to the area in that is will have its own onsite car park situated in idyllic surroundings."

Earlier this week, it was reported that a Welsh farmer had agreed to lease one-and-a-half acres of land to be used as allotments for villagers living in Leeswood, near Mold in Flintshire.
