Gardening becoming more popular

05/02/2010

Gardening becoming more popularThe grow your own trend has increased the popularity of gardening, a new survey has revealed.

Research by the Horticulture Trade Association (HTA) shows that gardening is at its most popular since 2001, Horticulture Week reported.

The study shows that two-thirds of those surveyed enjoy gardening, while people are also spending more time tending their plants now than in previous years.

According to the research, the average age of keen gardeners is 54.

Adam Wigglesworth, Ayletts Nurseries director and HTA retail management committee member, said the grow your own trend would continue in 2010.

He also noted that young people are becoming more interested in gardening.

Earlier this week, the HTA announced that February's plant of the month is the Evergreen Clematis.

David Gilchrist, from the HTA, noted: "In the garden, clematis will entwine and will happily grow through trees, shrubs, evergreens, trellis, fencing or any prepared structure."
