Get ready to plant vegetables, says expert
22/03/2010
Gardeners across the country should consider getting their green spaces ready for sowing vegetables, it has been claimed. An article in the Daily Telegraph noted that late March or early April is the best time to plant a range of vegetables including carrots, spinach, lettuce, peas and rocket. While most of these can be sown directly into their growing positions, other vegetables, such as leeks, cabbages and broccoli should be planted in a seed bed and moved to their final positions later, the article advises. Writing in the Guardian, green-fingered enthusiastic Paul Williams suggested that early spring is the most exciting time to get to work on a garden. He added that now is a good time to plant primulas, polyanthus, pansies, pots of dwarf irises and miniature daffodils, as they can hold up to the cold weather. He added: "Don't be panicked into sowing seeds outdoors. Wait until the soil is warm, when they will have a good start." Although many garden centres encourage people to buy their summer plants early, a cold frost could kill them, he advised. Make the most of your garden with our garden prizes.
