Government announces plans to phase out peat-based compost

09/03/2010

Government announces plans to phase out peat-based compostPlans to phase out the use of peat-based composts by amateur gardeners over the coming years have been announced by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.

As part of the Act on CO2 campaign, gardening centres and DIY stores will stop selling peat-based composts to amateur gardeners by 2010.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn, who launched the campaign, said the plans were important for the environment.

"The horticultural industry has made progress in reducing peat use over recent years, but given the urgency of reducing our emissions we need to go much further," she added.

Backing the campaign, celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin added: "Using peat-free products in the home and garden is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways that people can make a positive environmental impact and reduce their carbon footprint."

The news comes after tests from Which? Gardening found that peat-free compost performed better than traditional versions.
