Energy labelling in homes and smart readers are among the top green home improvement trends for 2010, according to American non-profit body the Earth Advantage Group.
Sean Penrith, executive director of the organisation, said that more accurate energy labelling will begin to become evident in homes and offices this year.
Smart meters will increase in popularity, he claimed, adding that the devices "will go a long way towards helping change homeowners' energy behaviour and drive energy conservation".
His comments follow a UK government announcement last month, where it said smart meters will act as the cornerstone of a more efficient, greener electricity grid system.
Power suppliers such as British Gas will be responsible for installing meters in each of Britain's 26 million homes by 2020.
Mr Penrith added that while most of the construction industry had a tough time during 2009, green building was "a bright spot in an otherwise lacklustre year".
