23/03/2010

Grow your own 'offers garden bargains'With the cost of food rising, the grow-your-own trend can provide plenty of garden bargains, it has been claimed.

According to the Grocer, fruit and vegetable prices are soaring in supermarkets across the country, with oranges now costing 25 per cent more than last year.

The cost of cauliflower is also up by 12 per cent while cherry tomatoes now cost ten per cent more.

Lucy Halsall, editor at Grow Your Own magazine, said that as well as being a garden bargain, growing your own can provide a range of other benefits including helping people achieve a healthier lifestyle.

"I think there are certain instances where it can save you a lot of money – but it also brings so many other benefits as well. Fresh produce keeps you fit and healthy, there are lots of other reasons for growing your own," she noted.

She added that more people are getting involved in gardening, noting: "It is one of these hobbies that once you get latched onto it, it is quite difficult to give up."
