Honey fungus is most 'bothersome' garden diseases
18/02/2010
Honey fungus is the most troublesome garden disease for green-fingered people in the UK, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The list is based on the number of enquiries the RHS receives about diseases. A powdery mildew called Phytophthora also rose further up the list of bothersome diseases, Horticulture Week reported. The only effective remedy to honey fungus "is to excavate and destroy, by burning or landfill, all of the infected root and stump material," the publication noted. Led by principal plant pathologist Dr Beatrice Henricot, the RHS plant pathology team is working on a number of research projects on honey fungus (Armillaria) and Phytophthora. "There are seven species of Armillaria in the UK but only four of them were recorded in gardens," she told the news provider. Last month, the RHS said snails and slugs were number one on the organisation's top ten garden pests list of 2009. Make the most of your garden with our gardening deals.
