Keep the doctor at bay by gardening every day
26/05/2010
Spending time in the garden is good for your wellbeing, a leading psychologist has advised.Professor Geoff Beattie from Manchester University said that spending time in green environments such as gardens and parks can help lower stress levels. "Gardening itself is a good physical activity, in addition, it has got the desired characteristic of taking you out of yourself, caring and nurturing and thinking about something else and again, you are tending to spend prolonged periods of time in a natural environment," said Professor Beattie. "Natural environments illicit specific emotional reactions, which reduce levels of stress; they promote people's willingness to express positive views like joy and satisfaction," he explained. Last week, research from Ronseal revealed that a quarter of Brits could be putting their wellbeing at risk by failing to spend enough time in the "right kind" of outdoor space or garden. The study found that people were spending too much time away from green areas. This 'lack of green' phenomenon can manifest itself as negative emotions such as stress, apathy or anxiety, Ronseal said. Make the most of your garden with our free plant deals.
