Look out for longhorn beetles, the HTA warns
01/02/2010
Gardeners are being urged to watch out for signs of Citrus and Asian Longhorn beetles by the Horticulture Trade Association (HTA). The Boskoop area of the Netherlands has already succumbed to an outbreak of the beetles, which are considered an invasive pest. Tim Briercliffe, HTA director of business development, said beetles pose a "real threat" to gardens and the wider environment. "They can infest a very wide range of broad-leaved trees. There are no known outbreaks in the UK at present and it is vital that we keep the beetles out of the UK," he added. Citrus longhorn beetles are a pest of citrus and apple trees, but can also be hosted by beech, birch, hawthorn, hazel, horse chestnut, maple, plane, poplar, oak and willow, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said. An adult male citrus beetle is black with white markings and will measure about 21 to 27 mm long, it added. Make the most of your garden with our garden bargains. Posted by Jez Walters ![]() |
