People will be able to avail of an increased number of allotments, under new plans announced in the government's Food 2030 report.
According to the report, which was unveiled on January 5th, the government is planning on encouraging people to produce their own food via community allotment schemes.
It states that "meanwhile leases" will be made available, allowing communities to use temporarily vacant land for the purpose.
Commenting on the plans, Emma Hockridge, spokesperson for The Soil Association, stated that "there is very little detail in the report about how this scheme would work, but in theory it is an excellent idea".
"It has been suggested that there could be temporary leases for land before it's developed, but publicly owned land could also be used for growing on a permanent basis," she added.
She also noted that the initiative could help tempt more people to grow their own food, especially because of the long waiting lists for allotments.
