People encouraged 'to tackle plant invaders' threat'
08/06/2010
People across the UK are being encouraged to tackle the threat from non-native invasive plants by the National Trust. The organisation is holding the first ever Plant Invaders Week (June 5th-12th) at seventy National Trust sites across the UK. Simon Ford, National Trust Nature conservation adviser, noted that although only one out of every 1,000 non-native species are a danger to our wildlife, "their impact is second only to the impact of habitat loss". "If we sit back and do nothing there is a real possibility that a few non-native invasive plants will survive and we will lose the beauty and diversity of our landscape," he added. People are being encouraged to help remove plants and carry out surveys to establish their true extent during the week. Earlier this year, the UK government announced that it had granted permission for an insect from Japan to be released in order to control the invasive plant, Japanese knotweed.
