Planting vegetables instead of flowers next gardening trend?
14/01/2010
Traditional floral displays, including hanging baskets and herbaceous borders, could be replaced with vegetables and fruit under new plans being considered by Lancashire town, Clitheroe. Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Rose Connor, a councillor who is proposing the motion, said the scheme is about "getting the community to source food in their locality", adding that "our dependency" on shipping food from across the globe "needs to cease". "We need to move towards a locally-sourced economy and take responsibility as individuals for our own food production," she added. Her comments follow an article in the Daily Telegraph in which garden expert Elspeth Thompson said more people had been picking berries in the autumn. The gardener recommended planting an edible hedge, adding that it is a good garden bargain because it offers a way of getting seasonal food for free, while also adding a boundary wherever you need it. "It's certainly a much cheaper and more attractive way of creating a boundary than buying a fence or building a wall," she continued. Make the most of your garden with our free plant deals.
