Potatoes 'a firm allotment favourite'

10/02/2010

Potatoes 'a firm allotment favourite'No allotment, garden or grow-your-own plot is complete without potatoes, an industry expert has said.

Writing for Horticultural Week, Miranda Kimberley said gardeners are continuing to discover the benefits of planting garden bargains such as potatoes.

Even people who only have a patio or balcony can now plant some tubers because of the range of purpose-built tubs and bags now on the market, she noted.

Robert Barbour, managing director of Jamieson Brothers Annan Seed Potatoes in Dumfriesshire, added: "The older varieties are still very popular, such as the first earlies Duke of York and Red Duke of York — nice floury potatoes that chip well."

"The maincrop King Edward is still highly sought after too," he told the news provider.

Mr Barbour added that the biggest issue potato growers face is blight, adding that some fungicides used to protect crops will be banned under new EU regulations.

The UK's Potato Council recently launched a campaign to get the tuber classified as a supercarb in an attempt to promote the potatoes "unique dual identity" as both carbohydrate and vegetable, the BBC reported.
