Seed potatoes and carrots 'good for beginners'
25/03/2010
If you're thinking of taking up gardening, seed potatoes and carrots are good vegetables to begin with, it has been suggested. Lucy Halsall, the editor at Grow Your Own magazine, has claimed that seed potatoes are among the simplest of vegetables to grow. With the current good weather, this weekend could prove to be a good time to start your amateur gardening career, she added. "Find a nice open spot with well-drained soil, dig a hole, pop your potato in and then they can be harvested in July or August, or even June depending on the variety." "You really don't need to deal with them hardly at all, so that's really easy," she added. People living in warmer areas will soon be able to sow carrots and radishes, which are also quick to germinate and simple to grow. "Salad leaves again are really popular lettuces, or rocket, even herbs like coriander or basil are very quick to mature as well so are worth a try," she concluded. Last week, research by B&Q revealed that gardeners are now choosing vegetable seeds over flower ones. Make the most of your garden with our garden prizes offers. Posted by Carla Spuri ![]() |
