Solar panels 'mean homeowners have everything to gain'
09/08/2010
Over the last few years, a lot of emphasis has been placed on green energy. Realistically, it makes sense; oil is eventually going to run out so we should be utilising the other energy sources that are available.Earlier this year, the Department of Energy and Climate Change introduced two carbon-cutting incentive schemes. It is hoped feed-in tariffs, a subsidy that pays individual households for feeding electricity into the national grid, will help people to save money on their fuel bills, reduce carbon emissions and generate their own low-carbon electricity Under the plans, individuals, organisations or businesses in Britain who install low-carbon electricity generation technology will be paid money for every unit of electricity they generate and will get an extra three pence per kWh for every unit they do not use that is exported to the grid. As well as generating an income for a household, homeowners should also benefit from reduced bills, since they'll be able to use some of the energy they produce. Now, a UK company is launching a £1 billion solar panel giveaway that will allow 100,000 homeowners to access the technology for free. Under HomeSun's plans, homeowners will be able to generate their own electricity, but any income made through the government's feed-in tariff will be collected by the company. "We will put the equipment - which you would typically have had to pay up to £15,000 for - on your roof and you will receive the free electricity," said Daniel Green, chief executive officer of the firm. "We will take the long-term payback and we will stand by you for the 25 year period, but you are generating electricity beyond [that] because the solar panels remain on your roof." He added that homeowners had "everything to gain" from the scheme and would benefit from the savings made on their energy bills. "I think it is a brilliant way to get us to grid parity where there is no contribution needed by utilities or government and we are all benefitting from solar power," he said.
