Sort your rhubarb now, advises top gardener

Sort your rhubarb now, advises top gardenerPeople who grow rhubarb should get to work on sorting large clumps now, a gardening expert has said.

The best time to sort a large bunch of rhubarb is early springtime, according to green-fingered expert Val Bourne.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Ms Bourne said people should begin by identifying the large dome-like buds.

These should then be split into chunks containing four or five buds using a spade, she advised.

"Replant in enriched soil containing garden compost, making sure that the top of the clump is just above the ground," she advises.

The stems should not be picked during the first year or two, while flowering spikes should always be removed, she concluded.

The BBC also noted that forcing rhubarb is one of the main gardening jobs at the moment.

Gardeners should also move shrubs and sow beetroot this week to ensure their future growth, the news provider added.
