Will 2010 be known as the year of 3D?

16/07/2010

Will 2010 be known as the year of 3D?After the success of James Cameron's Avatar earlier this year, and decisions by the likes of Sky to show sports with an added dimension, 2010 has felt like the year of 3D.

It's now possible to buy a 3D TV and, if comments by Murray Pannel, head of marketing for Ubisoft UK, are to be believed, every home will have one of these sets by 2012.

But not everyone is as taken with the idea of 3D TV. In fact, Fraser MacDonald, online editor of Stuff.tv, believes that 3D hasn't had a massive impact on the entertainment industry, as of yet.

Although people are now used to viewing 3D films in the cinema, the technology hasn't had the same impact in our home, he said, adding that the benefits of 3D viewing remain unclear.

"There's an on-going debate about whether there are significant entertainment advantages of 3D for the person watching the film, or whether it's just a tool used the studios and the cinema to protect their content," he said.

But, he did admit that 3D isn't going to go away anytime soon, although he expects people won't be throwing out their regular TVs yet.

"It's going to stick around, definitely, but it's not going to replace everything else that we already have. It's just an additional way of viewing content," he said.
