Smaller cars in demand for credit crunch travel

Smaller cars in demand for credit crunch travelOne in three Brits thinking about buying a car for their credit crunch travel needs are considering downsizing from their current vehicle, according to uSwitch.com.

A new survey by the comparison site revealed that as petrol prices continue to rise, 36 per cent of drivers believe fuel efficiency is the most important factor to consider when buying a new vehicle, leading many to choose smaller models.

Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Of those motorists who are in a position to afford a new vehicle, size and fuel efficiency have emerged as crucial factors when choosing a new car.

"Consumers seem to be soley focussed on keeping the longer-term running and maintenance costs are kept to a minimum."

However, this increased popularity of small cars could spell bad news for second-hand buyers, as some small cars have increased by as much as £830 in the past year.

Used car website Motors.co.uk recently urged motorists to take advantage of the government's £2,000 scrappage incentive "before it's too late".
