Birds 'changed' by garden feeders
04/12/2009
Feeding birds in your garden could be changing their evolution, according to scientists. Results from a new study show that a species of European birds follows a different "evolutionary path" if they spend the winter eating food put out for them in UK gardens. In the journal Current Biology, the researchers say one population of blackcaps has already begun to split into two separate species because of kindly gardeners. Although the birds naturally winter in Spain, where they feed on fruit and olives, one group of blackcaps has begun to spend the winter months in the UK after discovering the rich pickings left in gardens. In less than 30 generations, the birds visiting British gardens during the winter have developed different-shaped wings and beaks. According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, female blackcaps have a chestnut head (cap), while males ones feature a black cap. Make the most of your garden with our garden bargains.
