Craig Phillips: Beware of asbestos when doing home improvements
05/07/2010
Although it can be tempting to rush out and buy the latest home improvement offers, it is important to factor in asbestos dangers before carrying out any work in your house, two experts have said.Big Brother champion and TV DIY star Craig Phillips said asbestos was used in homes that were built as late as 1989 and could be found in old floor tiles, toilet systems, textured ceilings and even boiler cupboards. Asbestos has a number of health risks, he noted. "One person is dying every five hours in the UK of mesothelioma, which is a disease caused directly by asbestos." Helena Shovelton, chief executive for the British Lung Foundation, advised people to be "asbestos aware". "Don't just pick up the hammer and start doing dangerous things in the house when you don't know and you haven't checked." The comments came after a survey by the British Lung Foundation found that nearly two-thirds (65 per cent) of British homeowners are not confident of identifying asbestos in their own homes.
