Equity release 'will become mainstream' in future

15/10/2009

Equity release 'will become mainstream' in futureEquity release is likely to become a more mainstream option for pensioners as the average age of the population rises, according to a leading authority on the subject.

The latest market monitor from Key Retirement Solutions shows that the schemes have increased by 13 per cent during the last quarter, amounting to total lending of £214.2 million.

Andrea Rozario, director general of Safe Home Income Plans (Ship) said that interest in equity release is increasing due to the ageing population, low interest savings rates and the effect the recession is having on pensions.

"Eventually, we feel that will bring equity release into mainstream retirement planning, rather than it being a marginalised product that is seen as a last resort," said Ms Rozario.

"It's only natural that people will think about how they can utilise their biggest asset, which is their bricks and mortar," she added.

Office for National Statistics predictions suggest that by 2033, 23 per cent of the population will be aged 65 and over compared to 18 per cent aged 16 or younger.
