Frost threatens to cut short spring gardenGardeners are being encouraged to prepare for a week of unseasonably heavy frosts which could damage and kill off plants.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, gardening expert John Bingham warned that people should delay planting out tomatoes and other delicate fruit and vegetables, which would normally be safe to plant out in May because of the bad weather.

Alan Power, head gardener at the National Trust's Stourhead gardens in Wiltshire, said it was a very late for frost, adding that it is worrying.

"Usually you can relax once April has gone out, a lot of people will have prepared pots and hanging baskets, you just don't expect to have to protect them," he noted.

Mr Power added that the life of current spring garden will also be shortened because of the frost.

Last week, a study by the University of Essex found that even spending just five minutes each day gardening or walking in a green area helps people's mood, self-esteem and mental health.
