Gardeners urged to grow more fruit

16/10/2009

Gardeners urged to grow more fruitGardeners should be encouraged to grow fruit as well as vegetables and salads, it has been claimed.

According to the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), while the number of people embracing the trend for grow their own has more than doubled in two years, less than two-fifths of gardeners are planting fruit trees or shrubs.

In order to boost the popularity of fruit growing PlantforLife and the HTA have teamed with celebrity gardener Chris Collins to educate people about what are the best fruits to grow.

"Despite the surge in grow your own gardening, many people still overlook the possibilities of home grown fruits and berries. But, there is an increasing number of tasty, unusual fruit such as gooseberries and loganberries that will happily grow in the UK climate," commented the HTA's David Gilchrist.

The Archbishop of Canterbury recently lent his support to grow your own initiatives, saying: "More people ought to have allotments. It's part of reconnecting - the sense of connectedness to natural processes."
