Gardening offers hope to war zone victims
29/12/2009
A new gardening scheme in Manchester which was started to help children overcome war zone trauma has been expanded.St Peter's School in Gorton set up the scheme six years ago to help young refugees arriving from places like Iraq, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The specialist gardeners employed by the school quickly realised that the pastime was a useful way of getting the young people to open up about their problems. Now, more than 70 people are involved in the project, which has had more than £20,000 invested in it since it was launched. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, gardener Simon Read said: "Some pupils may have had major trauma in their life but we have also engaged students who are on an alternative curriculum or may not be engaged by the classroom. "Coming here is a positive way for them to learn. We don't tell them what to do. They choose for themselves." Recently, the Times' Caroline Donald claimed gardening is no longer viewed as a retirement-age pastime by the young. Make the most of your garden with our gardening deals.
