Government urged to produce equity release guide

23/09/2009

Government urged to produce equity release guideSome of the UK's equity release providers are lobbying the government to produce a guide for those approaching retirement age to inform them of the solutions.

The equity release guide is being championed by Safe Home Income Plans (Ship), which represents firms such as Aviva, Prudential, Just Retirement and Northern Rock, reports the Financial Times.

Andrea Rozario, director general of Ship, told the newspaper: "What we want for equity release is for it to be considered alongside other retirement planning options such as shopping around for an annuity.

He added that a pre-retirement leaflet should be distributed by the Department for Work and Pensions to people applying for the state pension.

The calls come as a report by the Pensions Policy Institute found that property ownership is destined to become a much more common way of funding retirement in the future.

However, it found that for most people this would be a complement to a pension and not a substitute.
