Govt attempting to stop garden grabbing
10/06/2010
Local authorities are to be given more power to prevent 'garden grabbing' and the overdevelopment of neighbourhoods, under new plans announced by the government. Greg Clark, minister of state, said to stop unwanted development, gardens would no longer be classified as brownfield land. Speaking at the Housing Now event, Ian Fletcher, commercial and residential director for the British Property Federation, said that the organisation does not "disagree with the principle of reclassifying gardens as greenfield". However, he added that he is concerned about how the plan will be implemented, noting that the recent government announcement to hand local authorities more control over housing and planning decisions will require increased resources and "well developed local plans" in order to be successful. "Pre-emptive announcements without clear transitional arrangements are loathed by our members, who want certainty of process," he said. Make the most of your garden with our garden bargains.
