Wet weather boosts home improvements
12/08/2009
Recent wet weather has resulted in a surge in home improvements as people look to occupy themselves indoors over weekends and holidays.Research from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and KPMG highlighted that sales of furniture, wooden floors and carpets were at their highest in three years this July, while more people also opted to splash out on new kitchens and bathrooms. Stephen Robertson, the director general of the BRC, said: "The largely cooler, wetter second half of the month turned attention indoors, helping sales of furniture and homewares which have been under pressure throughout the downturn. There are some signs that people are using holidays to improve their homes rather than spending on going away." Last month, DIY chain B&Q's owner Kingfisher said that its business had been boosted by rising home improvement-related sales. The stores' like-for-like sales rose a better than expected 0.7 per cent in the ten weeks to July 11th. Upgrade your lifestyle with our latest home improvement offers. ![]() |
