'High hopes' for English tourism in 2010
24/12/2009
England may be the holiday destination of choice for many Brits next year, according to the national tourism office. Many people opted to save cash this summer by taking a "staycation" and Visit England's head of strategy and engagement Jenny McGee thinks this trend may continue in the new year, stating that the body has "high hopes" for domestic tourism next year. "2010 will see the Illuminating of Hadrian's wall in March and the Tall Ships coming to Hartlepool in August. These events are sure to draw even more visitors to England's northern regions, maintaining the trend for taking short breaks in Cumbria, Yorkshire and the north-east," she added. Ms McGee's comments come after figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that fewer Brits are heading abroad, with 14 per cent fewer people venturing overseas in the 12 months to October 2009 compared to the same period the previous year.
