AITO: Be aware of differing ash cloud disruption compensation packages
10/05/2010
People need to be aware of the compensation offered by tour operators and airlines when it comes to disruption from the volcanic ash cloud, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has said. There are now worries that there will be a summer of disruptions caused by the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano, which has been affecting people with both expensive and cheap flights since April. Commenting on the news, Sue Ockwell, spokesperson for AITO, said that those on a budget should be especially careful as currently, airlines are less likely to offer compensation than tour operators. "If it's a couple and you've both got credit cards then it's not the end of the world but if there is a family of you and budgets are fairly tight then the last thing you need is to be stuck for an extra five or six days and have to incur the costs. She added: "If you get caught out with the ash cloud but have booked with a tour operator, then the tour operator is obliged to sort everything out."
