Asia to become top cruising destination?
01/02/2010
The coming years could see Asia emerge as a favourite destination for cruising, it has been claimed. Last week, UBM International Media announced that the trade show Cruise Shipping Asia will take place from November 15th18th 2011, at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The show's organisers said the event will help establish the region as one of the top locations for cruises. Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, said that although the Asian market was definitely emerging, she didn't think it would be the next major growth market. However, she added that it will become a more popular in "a decade or so". Ms Spencer Brown commented: "Asia has enormous potential to be a huge cruise destination. [But] for most travellers, it's an intimidating region to visit." "There are so many exotic spots - Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Japan - and they're spread way out, and have different languages, currencies and cultures. So a cruise is a perfect way to get that sampler experience," she added. The Passenger Shipping Association has predicted that a record 1.65 million UK passengers will take a cruise in 2010, an increase of 6.5 per cent over 2009 figures.
