Cairns proving popular for cruise ships

Cairns proving popular for cruise shipsCruise ships are increasingly docking in Cairns and tropical north Queensland in Australia, it has been claimed.

According to Rob Giason, chief executive officer of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, cruise ships are a "growing segment" of tourism in Cairns, Port Douglas, Cooktown and Thursday Island.

Last weekend, two of the world's most luxurious cruise liners visited the area, including the Seven Seas Voyager which docked at Cairns, the Cairns Post reported.

According to Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Cairns offers 300 days of sunshine per year and provides easy access to two World Heritage Sites – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.

The organisation noted: "Here we enjoy around 300 days of sunshine a year, plenty of space and a friendly, relaxed tropical lifestyle."

During its summer months, temperatures in Cairns range between 23 degrees C and 31 degrees C and rarely fall below 17 degrees C during the winter months.
