Cruise deals 'could see Alaska become more popular'
29/04/2010
Alaska's cruise deals which saw the US state end its controversial entry fee on cruise ships could help make the destination more popular, it has been claimed. According to the Independent, more liners could follow in the footsteps of Oceania Cruises, an up market cruise line which will offer ten cruises to Alaska from 2011, and add the state to their list of places to visit. The controversial tax, which was introduced in 2006, placed a $50 (37) entry fee or "head tax" on each passenger of large cruise ships, leading large lines such as Carnival, Norwegian and Princess cruises to either cut their schedule or pull out of the state. However, Alaska's state legislature approved a bill that would reduce the tax in April. Speaking to the newspaper, Oceania founder Frank Del Rio said: "Our guests are always seeking destinations rich in history, culture, adventure and stunning scenery. The great state of Alaska delivers all of these points of interest and more." Earlier this year, Jacqi Todd, UK representative for the Alaska Travel Industry Association, said a cruise offers a good way to explore parts of the region.
