Dubai welcomes world's tallest tower
05/01/2010
The skyline of the middle-eastern city of Dubai was lit with fireworks last night (January 4th 2010), as the world's tallest tower was unveiled. Standing at 828 metres, the Burj Khalifa tower breaks all existing world records for tall buildings. The impressive building features the world's tallest observation deck, located on the 124th floor, while the first Armani Hotel Dubai and Armani Residences, as well as corporate suites, residences, retail and leisure facilities, can also be found in the tower. Commenting on the building, Tom Hall, Lonely Planet travel editor, said that while people may not specifically go to Dubai to see the building, the tower will stand out in the area. "Dubai has for a while been somewhere that people go to because it has some outlandish things in it," he noted. "If you're going to have a city in the desert you've got to have something particular to attract people to come there and Dubai has done that very well over the last few years," Mr Hall added. He also noted that this year is probably a good one to "snag a bargain" because of the recent financial crisis in Dubai. Taiwan's Taipei 101 was previously the tallest building in the world.
