A number of Italian ports are set to become "green" as the government attempts to reduce the impact cruises have on the environment, it has been announced.
Venice, La Spezia and Civitavecchia are to become "green ports", where cruise ships will be able to avail of shore-side electrical power to their vessels, rather than leaving the ship running on generators and fuel while motionless in port.
Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic, said that the emission reducing "cold ironing" technology was pioneered in Alaska, a popular eco-cruise destination.
She added that most eco-cruise liners use small, low-impact ships while visiting destinations.
"Most popular eco-destinations are places like Costa Rica, the Galapagos Islands, and Antarctica, among others. None of the big ships we typically associate more with cruising offer eco-related voyages.
"Prior to economic meltdown, we saw a lot of growth though now that's slowed. I do think that with a healthy economy, this is a niche of cruising that will continue to expand," she added.
