Exploring the wine country in Virginia 'is exciting'The US state of Virginia is an easy port of call for people planning a trip to Washington DC, it has been claimed.

According to Diane Bechamps, vice president of marketing for the Virginia Tourism Corporation, visitors should consider exploring the nation's capital, before travelling to Virginia, where they can see the state's "flourishing wine country", beaches, mountains and history.

"Virginia is fortunate to have world-renowned icons such as Mount Vernon, Monticello, Arlington National Cemetery, the Blue Ridge Mountains and parkway Shenandoah National Park, Colonial Williamsburg and Civil War Trails," she added.

Earlier this month, Virginia Tourism Corporation said the state had posted a 16 per cent increase in visits from international travellers in 2009, despite the recession and an overall decrease in overseas visitors nationally.

The figures revealed that the number of international visitors heading to the state increased from 329,000 in 2008 to 380,000 in 2009.
