Greece 'a good option for cheap flights and accommodation'
27/05/2010
People planning to travel to Greece this summer could find plenty of cheap flights and holiday options because of the country's economic difficulties, it has been suggested. Economically hard-hit Greece could follow in Iceland's footsteps in 2008, with the cost of travel dropping, Cheapflights.co.uk has said. Nadine Hallak, travel expert at Cheapflights.co.uk, said: "Greece will likely do what other economically hard-hit countries have done in the past and leverage the travel industry to stimulate the economy. "When Iceland went bankrupt in October 2008, it immediately looked to tourism the cost of travel to Iceland for Britons dropped by 40 per cent and visitors flooded in," she added. While costs could drop over the coming months, Ms Hallak added that tourists should be cautious and follow FCO updates on the safety of travelling to Greek destinations. Earlier this month, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) asked tourism stakeholders to show their solidarity with Greece, stressing that the sector should not be suffering unfairly as a result of the current situation.
