Grounded flights lead to less carbon emissions

20/04/2010

Grounded flights lead to less carbon emissionsSome 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions have been saved as flights across the globe have been grounded due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano.

Figures from the Aviation Environment Federation highlighted that grounding 63,000 flights over the past four days has led to a massive reduction in emissions, with the body suggesting that the saving has been greater than the annual emissions of some developing nations.

Speaking to the Times, the federation's spokesperson Jeff Gazzard said that since planes have been grounded, the use of alternative transport methods such as ferries and trains has increased dramatically, showing there are alternatives to air travel.

"We hope that this will prompt people to stop and think about whether their flight is really necessary," he added.

Airlines have today (April 20th) started running flights to select airports in the UK. However, a second ash cloud has forced Manchester Airport to shut once again until 19:00 BST this evening.
