Has industrial action put people off booking holidays to Spain?
22/07/2010
Spain has always been a firm favourite with Brits. We've been heading to the Balearic Islands, the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol and the Costa Dorado for years. But, it's been a little harder to get there recently. This summer, ongoing disputes between the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Public Works, regarding pay and working conditions, mean that air controllers and other airport employees have been striking. Delays are expected to continue indefinitely on flights to Catalonia, the holiday islands of Majorca and Ibiza, and the airports of Valencia and Alicante which service the Costa Blanca. It hasn't been the easiest of years for travellers, what with the British Airways strikes and the ash cloud. Mike Greenacre, managing director of The Co-operative Travel, noted: "Travellers have faced a tough year with the ash cloud chaos and continuing economic gloom. Any air traffic controller strikes will add to their woes." He reckons people could be less likely to book a flight to the country. "Industrial action at the height of the summer season could put people off booking holidays to Spain as well as have a knock on effect to airlines taking customers to other destinations."
