Hong Kong: More than just a stopover destination?
02/08/2010
Like Singapore, Hong Kong is often regarded as a stopover destination, where people spend a few hours relaxing before embarking on the next leg of their tour. But, the Chinese island could actually be worth a longer visit.According to Anthony Lau, executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Hong Kong is a welcoming place to visit at any time of the year and has plenty to offer, particularly for those in search of some shopping bargains. And, let's be honest, most of us love a good bargain! Mr Lau said: "As a shopper's paradise, Hong Kong offers visitors a fantastic shopping experience. "From glitzy malls to funky street markets, and from trendy boutiques to traditional Chinese product stores and themed shopping districts, visitors can basically find everything from the latest designer fashion to electronic gadgets and best-value antiques and collectible." If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the shopping malls, heading to the Peak, one of the most popular attractions in Hong Kong, is a good option. "Looking down from the Peak, visitors can feast their eyes on breathtaking views of the surrounding city skyline, the world-famous Victoria Harbour, towering skyscrapers and peaceful green hillsides," the travel enthusiasts said. The island is also gearing up for a number of festivals over the coming months, including the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance. If you're a foodie, November might be the ideal time to visit, as it's been designated as the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Month. "To kick-start the month, we will stage the Wine and Dine Festival at the end of October, against the backdrop of our beautiful Victoria Harbour and cityscape. Visitors can enjoy gourmet food and award-winning wines from around the world, as well as live music and entertainment," he said. Posted by Carla Spuri ![]() |
