Inland waterway tourism grows

11/01/2010

Inland waterway tourism growsInland waterway tourism has seen phenomenal growth during 2009, according to the British Marine Federation.

Speaking at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show, Howard Pridding, executive director at the British Marine Federation, said that the trend for holidays at home, dubbed staycations, had helped influence the growth.

The weak strength of the British pound against other currencies had also helped the industry flourish, he added.

Commenting on the popularity of inland boating, Mr Pridding said: "Often despite the marketing that we do, the inland waterways are a hidden asset to this country and once people discover them they continue to take a holiday."

"You've got 200 miles of canal network around the Midlands and stretching across the country," he noted.

He added that the Thames is popular, as are the Fenland Waterways and the North York Broads.

The industry's annual statistics show that during 2008/09 revenue rose by 1.9 per cent to £3.16 billion.
