06/07/2010

Puerto Rico rainforest shortlisted for 7 Wonders of NaturePuerto Rico's El Yunque Rainforest has been shortlisted as one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature.

The rainforest joined Ireland's Cliffs of Moher, the US's Grand Canyon, Ecuador's Galapagos Islands and a number of other well-known natural sites on the list of finalists.

According to Anna Catchpole, spokesperson for the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, El Yunque Rainforest is extremely accessible and is less than an hour's drive from the capital of San Juan.

"El Yunque is very easy to explore and gives visitors a true taste of what a tropical forest has to offer."

As the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, it is home to over 200 species of trees and plants, 23 of which are found nowhere else in the world, she noted.

"The critically endangered Puerto Rican Amazon - Amazona vittata, a native parrot, with an estimated wild population of 30 - occurs exclusively in this forest."
