River cruises 'are changing for the better'

08/06/2010

River cruises 'are changing for the better'River cruises are changing for the better and will get more luxurious, according to one expert.

Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor in chief of CruiseCritic.co.uk, noted that river cruises had fallen behind the coastal cruise industry in terms of designing ships with amenities for luxury-minded travellers.

However, the sector is now "just starting to wake up and realise that it needs to add big ship-style amenities if it's going to grow the appeal", she added.

Her comments came as Viking River Cruises announced plans for a 170 million fleet development programme, while Avalon Waterways also recently unveiled the Avalon Panorama – the industry's first 'suite ship'.

These are positive signs, Ms Spencer Brown noted, adding that other liners are also "designing and building river-oriented vessels that offer more plush surroundings, alternative dining options, and more interesting shore tour options".

She also pointed out that many cruisers defined luxury by the experiences created, rather than "having butler service and caviar by the pool".
