Royal Botanic Gardens offer 'spectacular' orchid displayVisitors to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew will be able to see a spectacular orchid display this month, it has been claimed

Over 5,500 orchids, from Asia, Australia, America and South America are on display in the Princess of Wales Conservatory during February.

According to the Daily Mail, the highlight of the exhibition is a metal island, surrounded by palms, mangrove trees and Swiss cheese plants, which sits in the middle of a large pond.

Speaking to the newspaper, Phil Griffiths, displays co-ordinator at the botanic garden, said: "As soon as people walk into the conservatory their jaws hit the ground. There's nothing subtle about the display."

"It's deliberately big and brash, the perfect antidote to murky grey February days."

Last year, the garden said it had added a rare pink banana to its seed bank, which aims to protect endangered plants and store seeds of plants which are being damaged by climate change and human activities.
