South Africa's joy
05/08/2010
When Spain won the World Cup last month, they weren't the only country jumping for joy.In South Africa, a nation that had struggled politically, economically and socially for years, the (almost unexpected) success of the tournament has resulted in great celebrations in the country and right across the continent. After all, prior to the World Cup taking place, there had been plenty of suggestions that the nation's high crime rate and poor public transport infrastructure could undermine the tournament. Of course, these concerns proved unfounded in the end. "There's no doubt this month has been a dramatic success," the country's Saturday Star said in an editorial. The tournament has boosted the nation, Lebohang Mokhesi, country manager UK for South Africa Tourism. "The World Cup was an unparalleled success on three fronts: infrastructure developments, the world’s perceptions of South Africa and, of course, national pride." She reckons more and more people will now want to visit the country and even venture to areas which aren't as well known. "First-time visitors will continue to be keen to visit key tourism hubs such as Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, but improved road and rail infrastructure will, we hope, encourage people to travel out from these hubs and discover a little piece of the country that they can call their own." Hotel owners, some of which saw room occupancy grow by 50 per cent during June, according to STR Global figures, are also feeling optimistic. Research by Horwath HTL found that 84 per cent of participating hotel managers thought the average room rate would stay the same or increase, compared to World Cup rates. If you are planning to trip to the African country, you'll need plenty of energy, Ms Mokhesi recommended. "There's so much to do and see from adventure to spa; wildlife to world class hotels – and you can be assured of a very warm welcome." Posted by Carla Spuri. ![]() |
