Stick to safety at beaches, parents told

25/06/2010

Stick to safety at beaches, parents toldFamilies heading off on beach holidays this summer should ensure they stick to coastal areas that are patrolled by lifeguards, according to a safety expert.

Steve Wills, Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) beach safety manager commented that two-thirds of the incidents that the organisation dealt with last year involved children and called on parents to be extra diligent with youngsters.

"We would urge the parents to take extra caution when they go to the beach with their kids, make sure they stay with them at all times especially in the water, stay within an arms reach," he said.

Mr Wills went on to say that if families stick to areas where lifeguards are operating they can benefit from advice about the safest parts of the beach for swimming.

Figures released by the RNLI earlier this month showed that the average number of lifeguard incidents per beach increased by ten per cent last year compared to 2008, while beach-related lifeboat launches went up by 12 per cent.
