Sydney's cruise ship terminal to change

23/12/2009

Sydney's cruise ship terminal to changePeople aboard cruise liners arriving in the Australian city of Sydney will soon find that they are no longer disembarking on the iconic Darling Harbour.

The plan to move the docking place of the ships to White Bay, the city's industrial precinct, has been described as short-sighted by critics.

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald claims that not one of the 42 cruise ships which are currently being built in world's dockyards will be able to use the proposed passenger terminal because the new ships are too tall.

Speaking to the newspaper, Chris Brown, managing director of the Tourism and Transport Forum, criticised the plan, adding that moving the docking area was short-sighted.

The Shipping Australia chief executive Llew Russell added: 'Our figures suggest that over the first five to ten years, the White Bay terminal would be used extensively… after that, when the larger vessels come on line, the demand will fall away.'

Currently, the MS Oasis of the Seas, with a passenger capacity of 6,296 people, is the world's largest cruise ship at 360 metres long.
