The Cayman Islands 'are more than just a tax haven'
09/08/2010
The Cayman Islands are probably best known for being a tax haven, where individuals and corporations can take advantage of low or zero tax rates. But, these Caribbean isles also have plenty to offer tourists who are looking for a holiday destination with a difference, according to Don McDougall, Europe regional manager at the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism. It's also become increasingly popular as a holiday destination, with cheapflights.co.uk reporting a 72 per cent increase in the number of searches carried out for George Town in Grand Cayman. Made up of three islands, the Caymans are among one of the safest locations in the Caribbean, which is a key deciding factor when people opt for the destination, he said. "It's a very popular family destination because the infrastructure is really good, the medical care, the restaurants, the food, every aspect of lifestyle on the Cayman Islands has one of the highest standards of living in the world and that's for locals and visitors alike," he suggested. If you are thinking of visiting the islands, one of the highlights is swimming with stingrays. "There is nowhere else in the world that you've got up to 100 friendly stingrays that gather on the sandbar at about a mile out. It's completely open and absolutely no element of captivity whatsoever," he said. "It's a wildlife phenomenon that has been taking place over many, many decades. That is simply something that you can't do anywhere and the sandbar is only three foot deep in places, so absolutely anybody, children upwards, can go and do it." Mr McDougall also noted that Grand Cayman has no all-inclusive hotels or resorts, which makes it a more sociable place. "Everybody goes out to eat, and there's about 150 really fantastic restaurants around Grand Cayman which is quite a small island so the choice of really good quality food is superb and you're out eating with locals and visitors.
